HDR WORKFLOWS
Modern HDR workflows rely on several established standards. HDR10 is the most common, using static metadata and the PQ curve to define luminance based on human visual perception. PQ enables precise brightness control and is widely used in streaming. HLG is designed for broadcast and live content, offering backward compatibility with SDR displays.
Dolby Vision extends HDR further by using dynamic metadata, adapting brightness and contrast scene by scene. On mobile phones, Dolby Vision enables consistent, high-quality HDR playback across devices, helping creators deliver polished results in varied viewing conditions.
TRANSITIONING LEGACY SDR
Converting SDR content to HDR presents significant technical challenges. Since SDR footage lacks extended brightness and color data, upscaling it to HDR requires careful processing to avoid artificial or exaggerated results. Improper conversion can introduce clipped highlights, elevated noise, or unnatural color saturation. Tone expansion must be handled delicately to preserve the original intent while taking advantage of HDR displays. Automated platform conversions may not always produce optimal results, making creator-controlled workflows important. Balancing enhanced visuals with realism is a key difficulty when transitioning legacy SDR content into modern HDR environments.
REFINED VISUAL SENSE
Creating effective HDR content requires both technical knowledge and creative discipline. Creators must understand exposure, color management, and luminance limits across different standards and devices. Proper monitoring on HDR-capable displays is essential to judge results accurately. Skills in grading for multiple outputs, including HDR and SDR compatibility, are increasingly important.
Beyond tools, creators need a refined visual sense, using HDR’s expanded range purposefully rather than excessively. Managing highlights, contrast, and color to support storytelling—while avoiding visual fatigue—has become a critical skill in modern content creation.
